Emma Blundell

Emma is a director / writer who started Out of Order Theatre with a production of her play Past Tense (directed by Nina Brazier) at the Old Red Lion in 2005. She studied community focused theatre at Northumbria University and specialised in directing on the post graduate programme at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. She was formerly Artistic Director with Little Jo Theatre (T.I.E., Newcastle upon Tyne) and Stick and Hoop Workshop Theatre (London) and Associate Director with joinedupwriters (London).

She has directed across London and the North East on productions ranging from established classics to new writing, devising to sketch shows; her credits for new writing include Insane Jane (Lift 5065 at Soho Theatre and Pleasance, Edinburgh), Perfection (Old Red Lion Theatre), The Wooden Pear (The Union Theatre), Reel to Real (Theatre 503) and Hell Is Other People! (Hen and Chickens). As well as her strong involvement in new writing she has directed plays as diverse as Death and the Maiden, Titus Andronicus, Two and The Bald Prima Donna, as well as directing the British premiere of the Broadway show Fat Men in Skirts.

As a writer her work includes Oedipus What? and A Bit of How’s Your Father parts 1 & 2 (for Lift 5065 at Soho Theatre), The Tip of the Iceberg (North East Tour), and On The Hop (LOST Festival winner) as well as adaptations of Wuthering Heights and Lord of the Flies.

Her work for Out of Order Theatre includes directing Hot Man¸ Yesterday’s News (with Bronwen Carr and Kamaal Hussain) and a reading of In the Doll House (The Smoke Festival 2010) as well as leading devising workshops for projects dramatising A.A.Milnes’ short stories and reworking the mythology of Antigone. Her writing for the company includes Past Tense, Bellows (The Smoke Festival 2010) and Tail of Two Dogs.
